Recommended Earthquake Safety Actions © 11/4/2016 Earthquake Country Alliance Recommended Earthquake Safety Actions Federal, State, and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes.

You cannot tell from the initial shaking if an earthquake will suddenly become intense…so always Drop, Cover, and Hold On immediately! In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury if you:

Do not move to another location or outside. Earthquakes occur without any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl. You are more likely to be injured if you try to move around during strong shaking. Also, you will never know if the initial jolt will turn out to be start of the big one…and that’s why you should always Drop, Cover, and Hold On immediately! These are guidelines for most situations.

Actions Indoors: Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Avoid exterior walls, windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances, and kitchen cabinets with heavy objects or glass. However, do not try to move more than 5-7 feet before getting on the ground. Do not go outside during shaking! The area near the exterior walls of a building is the most dangerous place to be. Windows, facades, and architectural details are often the first parts of the building to break away. If seated and unable to drop to the floor, bend forward.

EVACUATE – Run.

If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises. Be sure to:

  • Have an escape route and plan in mind.
  • Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow.
  • Leave your belongings behind.
  • Help others evacuate, if possible.
  • Call 911 when you are safe.
  • Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be.
  • Keep your hands visible.
  • Follow the instructions of any police officers.Do not attempt to move wounded people.

SHELTER-IN-PLACE – Hide.

If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you. Your hiding place should:

  • Be out of the active shooter’s view.
  • Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e. an office with a closed and locked door).
  • Not trap you or restrict your options for movement.
  • To prevent an active shooter from entering your hiding place:
  • Lock the door.
  • Blockade the door with heavy furniture.
  • If the active shooter is nearby:
  • Lock the door.
  • Silence your cell phone and/or pager.
  • Turn off any source of noise (i.e. radio, television).
  • Hide behind large items (i.e. cabinets, desks).
  • Remain quiet.

PROTECTYOURSELF – Fight.

As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:

  • Acting as aggressively as possible against him/her.
  • Throwing items and improvising weapons.
  • Yelling.
  • Committing to your actions.

WHENPOLICEARRIVE

DO NOT proceed to Assembly Point (‘Meet Here’ on map). Follow police instruction.

  • Put down any items in your hands.
  • Keep hands visible.
  • Follow all instructions.
  • Avoid making quick movements towards officers.
  • Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating, just proceed in the direction from which officers are entering the premises.

After the violence has stopped, how will you know it is safe?

  • Call 911, they can provide status.
